"The Call to authenticity is sacred. It’s holy." -Paula Stone Williams
I began this piece at the start of 2020. Originally it represented my own “calling” to a life as a painter. Then the pandemic hit and as I painted it took on a new meaning. I turned up the volume on my headphones as I transferred my drawing to the panel, trying to drown out the unceasing noise of police helicopters and sirens during the first week of protests and riots in downtown LA.
Despite the fatigue and stress, I showed up at the easel each day. I listened to zen buddhism lectures as I worked and some of these concepts began to seep into the painting, as well as into my daily thoughts. The idea that we can find peace by becoming an ordinary person, one who lives without luxury or illusion. She is humble working in the field, the dull color of her dress blends her body into the color of the earth. Then suddenly, breaking through the darkness, reality has struck her like lightning. Through her work, she is carried from the stormy chaos behind her and guided into the brilliant light. Truth and destiny are calling her.
I'm sure that not all of these concepts will come through when others view the painting. But perhaps it can offer a glimmer of hope for the future, one that is grander than life as we knew it before.
